The Trinity College Commemoration Ball 2011 - 1st July

We are thrilled
to announce our
headline act:

The Streets

Ground breaking, progressive and wryly comic, The Trinity College Commemoration Ball proudly presents The Streets. The band have been a sensation since releasing seminal debut album ‘Original Pirate Material’ in 2002, which was voted by the Observer Music Monthly to be the Best Album of the decade. This success was followed by their masterpiece ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’, which cemented Mike Skinner, the creative force behind The Streets, as the new voice for a new millennium. The Guardian’s five star review of the album describes Skinner's style as ‘literally unprecedented’ going on to say that ‘there isn’t really any other album like’ it.

Over the last decade Mike Skinner has written and coproduced five top ten albums , culminating in what is to be their final release, the elegiac ‘Computer and Blues’, earlier this year. This will be your final chance to catch a band that have defined a generation and brought a new form of music into the public mainstream.

Tom Williams and the Boat are everybody’s new favourite band. Over the last year they have received extensive radio play, including special in house sessions for both Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens. Their debut album ‘Too Slow’, was compared to such diverse acts as Radiohead, Frank Turner and The White Stripes, with the BBC review of the album concluding that if the band continue in their current trend a ‘Brit Award’ could be just around the corner.

Filligar are a small slice of all American Rock and Roll. The energetic four piece hail from Chicago, Illinois. In America the band have supported a staggering variety of artists, ranging from The Black Keys to B.o.B. In touring their recently released album ‘The Nerve’, the band sold out world famous Mercury Lounge in New York. Sounding somewhere between Kings of Leon and Arcade Fire, Filligar will bring an exciting bluesy edge to the main stage.

Ice Black Birds are headlining the lounge stage. This Brighton Four piece have recently made a big splash on the music scene, taking Texas’s SXSW music festival by storm, and headlining an NME show in Brighton. Their music offers an interesting twist a classic rock sound. Think the Doors by way of Bryan Ferry.

We Thieves are a local Oxford University band, with a sound that could easily take them to the big time. The band plays a brand of soulful folk music recently popularised by the likes of Johnny Flynn and Mumford and Sons, with enough intensity and tuneful beauty to take them out of the shadow of these forbearers.

Zemmy and her band come from London to offer the Trinity Ball a healthy potion of soul and blues singing. Her elegiac single ‘Like Drowning’ has recently featured on a list of ‘Tracks of the moment’ compiled by The Times.

Erin K and Tash are an impressive anti-folk collective from London, who, like The Streets manage to simultaneously capture the comedy and tragedy of city life. Their hypnotizing single ‘coins’ recently featured on radio one as Huw Stephen’s under the radar pick of the week.
